Hey there party people! Long time no see! Sorry the blog updates have been
slow! We’ve been right in the grind of the fall semester here in college-world,
but soon the blogging should be back up to speed!
So last night I saw the new movie “Bad Grandpa” starring
Johnny Knoxville of “Jackass” fame. The film was released on October 25th,
and led its opening weekend’s box office, grossing a whopping 32 million. Which
is certainly no small feat, considering its notoriously difficult October release date.
The movie follows Irving Zisman (Knoxville), the 86(?) year
old grandfather who has been tasked with bringing his eight year old grandson
Billy (Jackson Nicoll) on a cross country road-trip. The boy’s crack-addicted
mother is sent to jail for violating her probation, and she asks her father (at
her own mother’s funeral nonetheless) to ensure that he makes it to his
dead-beat biological father in Raleigh, North Carolina.
But don’t be fooled! This is NOT a plot driven movie. While
it loosely follows such a premise, the film is essentially a series of obscene
events and stunts performed by Knoxville (in his old-man getup) and Nicoll.
Between robbing a convenience store for lunch, to launching a strip mall
kiddie-ride through a store window, the movie never lacks an interesting and
entertaining moment. The real life reactions are priceless and really make this
movie a great comedy.
I have to give credit to not only Johnny Knoxville, who
somehow continues to participate in this line of work even as he approaches his
43rd birthday, but more so to his co-star Jackson Nicoll. Nicoll may
be the most talented child I have ever seen. For someone his age to stay in
character so well is mind-boggling. I remember being told to keep a secret when I was 9
years old; I would have a stupid giggly smirk on my face for a week (at
least!). I find it so impressive that someone so young can be such a talented
actor. Kudos to him.
My thoughts? The movie was good! I really enjoyed it just as much, if not more, than it’s “Jackass” predecessors. While the stunts and activities may have been more tame than “Jackass”, the running plot kept the viewer just interested enough to want to keep watching. This seemed like more of a movie; unlike the previous films that had been more like 3 really long episodes of the hit “Jackass” TV show. There was rarely a dull moment. Definitely a movie worth watching.
